Robert Robert, fourth Lord Boyd, continued the feud with the Montgomeries, in which Patrick Montgomery was slain in December 1523. This feud was settled in May 1530 when Lord Boyd accepted two thousand marks "for the slaughter of his chief" ie James, 2nd Lord in 1484. He was restored and confirmed in the possession of his title and estates by a novodamus in 1549. In spite of the settlement of 1530, Lord Boyd slew Sir Neil Montgomery in the streets of Irvine in 1547. The feud continued till 1560. He married firstly Helen Somerville of Cumbruenethan and had children:
