James James, ninth Lord Boyd, succeeded his nephew in 1640. He was a steady Royalist and was fined $1500 under the "Act of Grace and Pardon" in 1654, (when Britain was under the rule of Oliver Cromwell) a sum afterwards reduced to $500. He established a school at Kilmarnock for "the education and learning of young ones." He married before 1640, Catherine daughter of John Croyke of York. This lady was descended from King Edward III of England through Lady Anne Plantagenate, sister to Kings Edward IV and Richard III. The had children:
