John
John
Boyd, who settled in Ireland in 1716 and bought the estate of Crosspatrick,
near Killala, Co. Mayo, belonged to a branch of family whose arms
were registered at the Lyon Office in 1672 (in which year registration
was first compulsory) by John Boyd, Dean of the Guild of Edinburgh,
recognised by the Lyon Office to be descendant of the Lords Boyd, and
from his crest descended from Thomas, second son of Alexander, 3rd
Lord Boyd. Burkes' Peerage also describes him as "descended of
the Family of Kilmarnock."
He
married and had children:
- Alexander
- Dennis
Boyd of Carrowkelly, died November 18th 1764, and was the ancestor
of the Boyds of Carrowkelly, and of Alexander Boyd who was drowned
and buried at Killlala January 9, 1800. This branch is now represented
by the Ormsby family.
- James, born 1725. Rector of Erris, near Killela.
- Jonathon,
Captain 44th Regiment. His wife Martha born 1731, died February
9, 1817 and is buried at Castlebar.
- Patrick,
born 1730. Described in his Tombstone as "a man of profound mathematical
knowledge, of devotion and integrity", he died 11th March, 1810
and is buried at Castlebar. It was probably his son, Charles Boyd,
who aged 17 entered Trinity Colllege Dublin, 3rd July, 1769, described
as a "son of Patrick Boyd, armiger."
