Robert, eighth Lord Boyd succeeded in 1626. He actively co-operated with the Covenanters against the King. He married Anne Fleming, daughter of the Earl of Wigtown, but died of a fever in 1640, aged 22. His widow married the second Earl of Dalhousie.
He was succeeded by his uncle James, ninth Lord Boyd
